Metinota sits on the shores of Jackfish Lake in the Rural Municipality of Meota No. 468, about 154 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon. Its name comes from the Cree language, where it means "It's really nice here."
The community incorporated on August 19, 1924, as the Village of Metinota. On August 9, 2019, its name was officially changed to the Resort Village of Metinota, so that it would match its municipal status as a resort village.
Today Metinota is a small lakeside resort village run by an elected municipal council and an appointed administrator.
